5 Goals For My Second Year at University

Friday, August 28, 2015

My second year at university is starting in the beginning of this October. *shocked emoji* I have learnt a lot in my first year, and I had come up with top 5 tips for a successful university life not long ago. Lately, I've been thinking about my goals for next year. Other than following those tips, I also have other things I plan to do - academically, socially, personally, and physically.

Fun fact: I took this photo at my uni in autumn last year ^^

1. Voice or video call my mom more often - We already text each other on Line every single day, but I want to take it further by calling her more often. I realize how lonely she must have felt when my brother and I are studying in UK. Because my dad rarely comes home from work, it's usually just mom and my sister at home. Soo yeah, I wanna call her more in hopes that she won't feel so lonely and to keep her company.

2. Make some close friends - I did have 'friends' in my first year but we're not really that close. I would describe them more like 'acquaintances'. However, there is one person who I can certainly call a friend (shout out to Tommy, my Singaporean buddy). I feel like the reason why I don't have many close friends is because I don't feel the need to have them when I have my boyfriend who is also my best friend, study buddy, everything I need and want XD I should change that mindset if I want to have some friends >.> I guess it would be nice to have some girl friends to hang out with now and then.

3. Make revision notes weekly - This would really help me stop cramming for exams ahaha. I'm still 50/50 about whether making my own notes is helpful for me. Because for some of my first year exams, I just read the lecture slides without taking notes, and I still got pretty high marks. For other exams that I made notes for, I did pretty well too. But I guess second year subjects will be harder and contain all new content (some first year subjects overlapped with A-levels). So it's better to be safe than sorry. I'm planning to make notes for everything that I learned in each week during a free period or perhaps, on Sundays. We'll see how it goes.

4. Workout on a regular basis - I did go to the gym in the last semester but I wasn't being consistent. I need to fix that. I'm going to plan my gym sessions and make them fit into my timetable no matter what. I'm aiming to workout at least 3 times a week. I know my boyfriend will be #1 motivation and inspiration haha. He's so dedicated to working out, and I admire him so much. Keep it up bae :D

5. Control my emotions and stop overthinking - I have a big flaw, and that is I overthink about things and have really bad mood swings. I really dislike the fact that those things negatively affect the way I respond to everyday events and how I treat other people. I'm going to find a way to make my moods more positive. I'm thinking of meditating for a few minutes everyday to help me calm myself and feel more peaceful. Do you know any good tips I could use to control my emotions and feel more happy? Please let me know, I would love to hear and try them out.

Do you have any goals for your next year at uni or work? What are they? Feel free to share them in the comments below :)

With love,

Nana

  2. Best of luck with your second year, sending you good luck vibes! I really related to your post, especially about overthinking and worrying which can be really difficult to deal with. One way that I deal with overthinking would be yoga. After I started taking a little bit of time for myself I found that I was happier and more grounded which also made me more focused and driven. You could follow along in the comfort of your room, there's a wonderful YouTube channel (yogawithadrienne) where you can find a variety of different videos that you might enjoy. Remember that everything always works out, and that you are strong and capable and this year will hopefully be the best one yet. All the best dear! xxxxx

  3. Good Luck in second year to you too Nana! It's all a scary thought when I think about it.. because it's so near! and I'd suggest you write down every emotion that you have that is frustrating and maybe that may clear your mind for the time being. It's so weird how in this case we're so similar. I have these annoying bad moods too :( but I guess that relates to the friend making part, speaking to a friend/ family member about it may help soothe the poopy emotion ! ^_^ <3 Always know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that all you are feeling is only temporary :D

    P.S. sorry I wasn't much help >_<

  5. I often struggle with whether or not should I take notes during class. I think it is more important to just pay attention of what the teacher is saying. But, if I take notes, I only write down important messages that may not be found elsewhere. And, I make sure I don't do too much color coding or keeping the notebook neat, that will just distract me.

I agree that you should have some close girl friends. Sometimes there are things you prefer to share with girls, and there might be some activities or interests that you and your BF don't share. Having some close friends can release some stress for your BF, and you won't be focusing too much on him.

    1. I feel you about the note taking bit haha. I love higlighting but sometimes it distracts me too much from the lecture XD Hm I'm not sure what you mean by releasing some stress for my boyfriend tho, we're both cool with always being with each other. We share the same interests thankfully :P

  7. Indeed it would sound a lot easier if you set your goals right. #5 is what I really need. I should stop overthinking and should divert my focus on the thing that truly matters, or else I would such so hard. tsss I actually consider myself as bipolar, sucks to be me. When tantrums hit me, I get really distracted that I cannot concentrate, and that I needed to work on this thing. Glad you're more set now, Nana. You can do it and goodluck!!

  16. Just the best for you! And for the overthinking part, I had/have the same problem. I used to be so stressed and overthink every little thing. But few months ago I started encouraging myself. I realised that almost always the things we are worried about and overthink turn out more than better. I tried to saybto myself that by overthinking, I only cause more problems and stress to myself and in the end, it wasn't even worth worrying. After learning this little fact, I became so much happier and enjoying life to it's fullest. I know it sounds ridiculous maybe, but making yourself believe that overthing won't fix it and you are doing it for nothing, is very helpful. Sometimes it's not about other people telling you this, it's about helping yourself on your own :)

    1. Aww thank you so much. Nono it's not ridiculous at all~ I completely agree that it's pointless to overthink about things when it doesn't make anything matter. I'll keep your advice in mind ^^

  17. I super need to take your third tip into account!! I haven’t been that bad this semester but the difference weekly notes make compared to cramming a week before exams is huge! Love how your tips aim for production but are very realistic. I hope you stick to them all! You’ve even given me some motivation!
